I'm getting back into the habit of photo shooting. I decided to jump right back in with an engagement shoot.
The lovely couple ended up planning an all day shoot with two locations in mind. The first spot was the South Coast Botanical Gardens in Palos Verdes, California ( http://www.southcoastbotanicgarden.org/ ). The photography policy here is pretty straight forward; don't step on the plants, and stick to the paths. There were too many great areas to choose from. A great location, and I highly recommend it.
All I had to shoot with was my Canon 5D mark II and 85mm 1.8 lens. I used open shade lighting technique with a large silver reflector on most of the shots taken at this location. The sun was definitely helping me out that day.
Below is an example of how the collapse-able light reflector (white side) was used to provide enough light to make this couple stand out against the bricks and dirt.
We shot in this location for a little over an hour. The shoot started beautifully, the sun was perfect.
It couldn’t have gotten better. We would have stayed longer, but the garden staff was kicking everyone out because they were closing.
We managed to snap a few “hurry up” shots as we were vacated.
We then moved the shoot location over to a nearby beach. We soon discovered that the sun had abandoned us. When we got to the shore, it was completely overcast. There would be no beach sunset shoot for us. I made the best of the situation used the dull grey light to get some base compositions, that I would later use to create a mood with in post production.
Always think ahead, and think on your feet; both are necessary, especially when you’re dealing with available light.

I really hope this great couple enjoys their photographs as much as I did shooting them.
I have experienced a huge drawback recently, due to a home burglary that resulted in all of my photo equipment being stolen. I have recovered my camera, but the rest of my lighting and other equipment is still missing.
LAPD was awesome enough to apprehend the burglars and return my Canon back to me.
I will be working on Natural Light photography exclusively until I can re-buy / regain all the equipment that I used to have.
